A quick glossary
Three words come up constantly and almost nobody uses them in normal life. The fascia is the flat board facing you at the edge of the roof. The soffit is the horizontal surface tucked beneath the overhang. The eave is the whole overhang, where the roof extends past the wall.Knowing the words is not a requirement, though it helps when a quote uses them. When somebody says the channel mounts under the soffit, you know exactly what they mean.
What the eave gives you
The mounting line was not chosen for looks alone, it is where several requirements meet. It is continuous, which matters because a light line that stops and restarts reads badly. Height gives you reach down the facade, and the roof above it takes the direct weather.
The direction the light points
Where exactly the channel sits is a real design decision. Mounted under the soffit, the light washes downward across the wall, which lights the building itself. On the face, the effect is a bright edge. Which one is right comes out of the design conversation.The eave line also determines how far down the wall the light reaches, which is why the same house can look very different depending on where the channel ended up.
When the eave complicates things
Not every roof has a generous overhang. A deep overhang shelters the hardware well and lets you tuck the channel out of sight, though it can shadow the surface you wanted lit. A shallow one exposes the run more and pushes the mounting decision. This is exactly the kind of thing a site visit settles and a phone quote cannot.
Everyday use
A lit eave line is genuinely useful after dark. The practical version is finding your keys at the door, which sounds small until it is raining. It also keeps the house from disappearing after sunset.
Gutters, and what happens when the roof gets replaced
A lot of things compete for that line: the gutter, the drip edge, and the track. If a roof or a gutter replacement is coming in the next year or two, say so during the consultation. The sensible order is roof first, then gutters, then lighting, since anything installed first has to come off. It is a five second question that saves a real headache.
Two story houses raise a second question
A single story house presents one eave. Add a floor and the plan has a decision in it. The top edge carries best. A lower eave over a porch or a garage puts light nearer where people actually are, which is more useful and less dramatic. Running both is common, and it can be phased.
